Framing Progress

Framing is moving along at a good pace. It should have been completed by now, but in keeping with our trend of setbacks things were slowed by floor joist selection. We originally were going with open web floor joists for all floors. However, the entire framing package was at risk of going over budget so Paul and the structural engineer went back to the drawing board to get the cost down. We have a number of LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams that allow us to have the open floor plan. These things are pricey and we can't get rid of them since they carry so much load. So the floor joists are now a combination of open web and wooden I-beams. It cost us a few days while all that got worked out.

Beth and I are in Cherry Log, GA this weekend for a little R&R. We rented a nice little cabin on a creek. On our way up here, we stopped by the Robert Bowden factory for a little tour. This is a local window and door company that is doing our custom windows and doors. For the amount of money we're spending, I asked if we could visit the factory since these windows are stocked in the big box stores. It's a pretty impressive operation. We even met with the engineers who came up with the design of our 10 foot corner windows units. It turns out that Bowden is not manufacturing our operable window units. Those are being manufactured by Kolbe. Bowden will then take the operable units and build fixed units around those. I guess I underestimated the amount of customization that was going to be required for windows.

Lastly, I've created a smugmug gallery with all the photos I've taken of the project. http://knowmeansyes.smugmug.com/Architecture/This-New-House/21606659_FM5Vm5
